The final round of competition saw exciting tennis which decided the grand finalists for next week.
In A Grade, Baimbridge and Pierce Up battled for the right to face Unreliables who had already booked their spot in the Grand Final.
The vast experience of Baimbridge (Doug Ward, Peter Fry, David Bain and Pam Lehmann) was not enough to hold out Pierce Up who have finished the season in hot winning form. Pierce Up won 5 sets to 1 (31-19). Justin Slade and Willow Sainsbury both won all of their 3 sets, and John Pierce and Jen Crawford chipped in with 2 sets each.
Their Grand Final opponents Unreliables warmed up with a convincing 6 sets to 0 (36-17) win over the valiant Musketeers.
Also in A Grade, X Factor fielded its strongest line up for the year (Andrew Whale, Davina Luhrs, Kerry Turnbull and Daniel Knight) and defeated Woolly Wonders (despite Carol Russell Bailey’s welcome return to action) 6 sets to 0 (36-17).
In B Grade, Goodies and CG Racquets faced off for the right to play Ark in the Grand Final.
A strong Goodies line-up (Peter Osmond, Tim and Lesley Dennis and Joanna Cochran) defeated the hardworking CG Racquets team (Hamish McDonald, Allan Oakley, Tracey Deary and Alicia Peach) 6 sets to 0 (37-17). Their Grand Final opponents Ark (Sally Allen, Butch Walker, Lyndel Robinson and Wally Koch) enjoyed a solid workout against Spiderbeat (Cathy and Cameron Webb, John Walter and Michelle Walkely) winning 6 sets to 0 (36-12).
There is much anticipation about the B Grade Final. Tony Allen will be back for Ark, and Wally Koch and Tim Dennis have been told by their respective coaches (wives) to avoid heavy work next Wednesday so they are in mint physical condition for the battle.
In other B Grade matches the very consistent Greenies (George Mclean, Lewis Kyle, Barb Brooke) were far too strong for the Super Smash Squad (Steve Criddle, Sam Hastie and Marita Martin) and AJ’s Angels (Bernie Grant, Paul Davis, Bill Sharp and Tony Allen) also had a good win over Easy Hit (Adrian Sainsbury, John Sarena, Dave Lewis and Sue Creedy).
Good luck to the Grand Finalists next week. For those not involved in the Grand Finals, the club will trial a “Fast 4” format. All tennis players regardless of age, ability or whether they are members are welcome to attend, free of charge.
