Last Wednesday was Grand Final night for the Summer Twilight Competition at the Hamilton Lawn Tennis Club.
The B Grade final was between Ark(Sally and Tony Allen, Lyndel Robinson and Wally Koch) and Goodies. The Goodies line-up (Tim and Lesley Dennis, Joanna Cochran and Peter Osmond) dominated their opponents and won 6 sets to 0 (36-15) Peter Osmond was in outstanding form dispatching short lobs with elegance and finality. Joanna Cochran and Lesley Dennis were terriers at the back of the court and Tim Dennis supported Peter in moving forward as often as possible and putting the pressure on their opponents.
Ark had a great season but it was not their night on Wednesday. The only bright light was a spirited fight back by Sally Allen and Lyndel Robinson in their set together, when they strung together 4 consecutive games to create some doubt in the minds of their opponents. However the fight back faded and Goodies won all sets for the night.
The A Grade contest was a thriller with Unreliables (Justin Ryan, Ben Carroll, Clay Tressider and Aleesha Phillips) just edging out Pierce Up (Justin Slade, John Pierce, Willow Sainsbury and Jenny Crawford) 3 sets all (29-28).
This always promised to be an entertaining match up, and the players delivered. The two Justins were opposed to each other as no 1’s and although Justin Slade took all 3 sets, Justin Ryan’s ability to fight back and take games from his opponent, ultimately tipped the scales in favour of the Unreliables. All players had their moments of triumph and despair as the momentum swung first one way and then the other, and either team would have been worthy winners.
On 19th March, the Ladies held their Grand Final. Team Lotto (Lyndel Robinson, Sally Allen, Tracey Deary and Jen Neaves) were far too good for Team Yonex (Nicole Riley, Louise Howman, Naomi McKay and Kelly Phelan) 6 sets to 0 (36-10).
Tennis goes into recess during the school holidays and will resume in the week commencing 13 April with the Men’s competition (Mondays), Mixed (Wednesdays) and Ladies (Thursdays).
With the end of daylight saving, all matches will now be restricted to the six illuminated courts.
All enquiries to enter in any of these competitions should be directed to Gerard or Rob.
