Week 5 of the Autumn Competition consolidated Baimbridge’s position as the stand out team.
Robert Fishburn made a cameo Wednesday appearance for Baimbridge and along with regulars Paul Davis, David Bain and Tryleen Phillips, they comfortably defeated BARK (Bernie Grant, Sally Allen, Lyndel Robinson and Wally Koch) 5 sets to 1 (33-17). Lyndel and Sally played brilliantly in their set together but otherwise it was one way traffic on the night. The word from the BARK camp is that having had a good look at Baimbridge they have discovered a few weaknesses which can be exploited in the grand final (assuming BARK get there). Time will tell.
In other matches, Endangered Species (Graham Wolfe, Butch Walker, Ken Lampard and Jen Neaves) recovered their form to defeat CG Racquets (Hamish McDonald, Lachlan Wark, Tracey Deary and Vicki Kearney) 5 sets to 1 (35-16).
Musketeers (Marcus Winter-Cooke, Rod Evans, Andrew Lacey and Gerard O’Keeffe) posted their first win for the season over Easy Hit (Adrian Sainsbury, Rob Graziadelli, John Sarena and Sue Creedy) 6 sets to 0 (34-14). Rob Graziadelli tried hard for the losers with delicate drop shots and smart volleying, but Musketeers were too steady on the night.
The last match saw Pierce Week (Willow Sainsbury, Arthur Perry, John Pierce and Deb Dark) soundly defeat AJ’s Angels (Bill Sharp, Aleesha Phillips, George Osmond and Maz Gough) 5 sets to 1 (33-17). This match saw the youngest club member (Willow Sainsbury) directly opposed to the oldest club member (Bill Sharp). It was a great duel with both players in good form and a testament to the inclusive quality of tennis as a sport.
Pierce Week are now in equal second place and might be the team to watch. They are all fierce competitors and will not fear Baimbridge when they meet in Round 7 on 27 May.
