Mixed Tennis Comp 27 May 2015

The final round of the Wednesday mixed competition was played in mild conditions, with the right to challenge Bainbridge for the premiership, up for grabs.

Pierce Week and ARK started the night on the same number of wins and sets won. Unfortunately for Pierce Week (Willow Sainsbury, Arthur Perry, John Pierce and Deb Dark) they were drawn against Baimbridge. Despite taking the most games off Baimbridge of any opposing team this season, Baimbridge (Paul Davis, Doug Ward, David Bain and Tryleen Phillips) won 6 sets to 0 (38-22).

CG Racquets (Lachlan Wark, Hamish McDonald, Tracey Deary and Alan Oakley) were too steady for Musketeers (Marcus Winter-Cooke, Andrew Lacey, Paul Huf and Amanda Gubbins) 4 sets to 2 (31-21). A highlight for Musketeers was the win by Paul Huf and Amanda Gubbins over Tracey Deary and Alan Oakley (6-2).

The experienced Endangered Species (Graham Wolfe, Ken Lampard, Butch Walker and Kathy Willsher) whitewashed AJ’s Angels (Aleesha Phillips, Joanna Cochran, Bill Sharp and Cate Mercer-Grant) 6 sets to 0 (36-9). In good sporting style Endangered Species paid tribute to the endeavour showed by AJ’s Angels and the tennis was more competitive than perhaps the results demonstrated.

The final match of the night was between ARK (Bernie Grant, Sally Allen, Lyndel Robinson and Wally Koch) and Easy Hit (Adrian Sainsbury, Rob Graziadelli, John Sarena and Sue Creedy). Easy Hit have had anything but an easy time of it this year but their cheerfulness has never wavered. ARK, with their eyes firmly on the prize next week, won well 6 sets to 0 (37-16). Easy Hit’s high point came in the first set when Adrian and Rob stretched Bernie and Sally to a tiebreak, but after that, ARK showed its class and won easily.

Next week’s Grand Final is between Baimbridge and ARK. Baimbridge will start very short priced favourites, but there is talent and grit in ARK from number 1 to number 4 player, so it should be a good contest.
