Round 3 of the spring mixed tennis competition at the Hamilton Lawn Tennis Club saw the two teams favoured to fight out the premiership assert their dominance over mid-table opponents.
Pierce Poor (Justin Slade, Willow Sainsbury, John Pierce and Raquel Casey) defeated Musketeers (Andrew Lacey, Marcus Winter-Cooke, Rob Stewart and Gerard O’Keeffe) 4 sets to 2 (31-17). Justin Slade lost only 1 game in 3 sets, while Marcus Winter-Cooke was a sterling competitor for Musketeers winning 2 out of his 3 sets.
Baimbridge fielded a strong line-up (Paul Davis, Kim Fielke, Tryleen Phillips and Bruce McNaughton) who defeated BARK (Bernie Grant, Michelle Walkley, Lyndell Robinson and Wally Koch) 6 sets to 0 (36-11). Baimbridge’s depth is a challenge to the other teams, with captain/coach Doug Ward waiting to return after holidays.
The ever reliable Endangered Species (Graham Wolfe, Ken Lampard, Kathy Willsher and Jen Neaves) got back on the winning list in style beating Easy Hit (Adrian Sainsbury, Sue Creedy, John Sarena and Steve Criddle) 6 sets to 0 (36-9). The scores did not seem to indicate the tightness of the contest as the players were out on court well past the finish time of the other games but, as is often the case, the better team just finds a way to win the crucial points, which then leads to the accumulation of games.
In the last contest CG Racquets (Zeb Lewis, Hamish McDonald and Alan Oakley) played in a modified format against Fresh Blood (Wendy Robertson, Aleesha Phillips and Chris Cowland). The adjusted scores were 6 sets to 0 (36-10) in favour of CG Racquets who look to be the leading team in the middle of the ladder, after Baimbridge and Pierce Poor.
The two pace setters do not meet until round 5 after the school holiday break. Their opponents until then face significant challenges in trying to find the weaknesses (if any) in Pierce Poor and Baimbridge.
