Mixed Tennis Report 9 Dec 2015

Week 5 of the Twilight Competition saw perfect conditions for tennis at the Hamilton Lawn Tennis Club.

Four B2 (George Osmond, Tim Mason, Kane Uebergang and Connor Burns) were too strong for CG Racquets (Zeb Lewis, Hamish McDonald, Alan Oakley and Tracey Deary) 6 sets to 0 (37-21). All sets were reasonably close, but CG Racquets could not get on the board despite playing well. Another feature of this game was the strong performance of 13 year old Connor Burns, who filled in admirably for Four B2.

Powerhouse team Baimbridge (Paul Davis, Doug Ward, Kim Feilke and Tryleen Phillips) asserted its authority over Jeals (Darren and Chelsea Jeal, John Walter and Bill Bailey) 5 sets to 1 (33-17). Warhorses John Walter and Bill Bailey filled in for Jeals but this is an example of what can happen if the seedings are not right. Young Chelsea Jeal was up against Doug Ward and despite her strong play, this seemed to unbalance Jeals.

Goodies (Tim Budenberg, Peter Osmond, Chris Cowland and Joanna Cochran) defeated Sierra Park A (Louise Patterson, Helen Wilken, Sam Clark and Wal Dyer) 5 sets to 1 (36-18). Wal Dyer appreciated the match being played on grass as he illustrated a full range of shots, many of them performed while rolling on the surface. The one set taken by Sierra Park A was with 3 players (Wal Dyer, Helen Wilken and her child in the womb) against Peter Osmond and Joanna Cochran.

The last match in A Grade was the match of the night, between Pierce Toff (Justin Slade, Willow Sainsbury, Arthur Perry and John Pierce) against Unreliables (Dave Wear, Justin Ryan, Ben Carroll and Aleesha Phillips). Pierce Toff edged out Unreliables 4 sets to 2 (31-27). Arthur Perry was a star for the winners and always seems to rise to the big occasion. Justin Ryan was seen getting some practice in after the match finished, indicating his determination to get back on the winners list as soon as possible.

In B Grade Easy Hit (John Sarena, Sue Creedy, Steve Criddle and Blair Burns) were no match for Musketeers (Michael Kelso, Rod Evans, Marcus Winter-Cooke and Amanda Gubbins) 6 sets to 0 (37-12). Steve Criddle and Blair Burns took the fight up to Marcus Winter-Cooke and Amanda Gubbins in their set (7-5) but otherwise Musketeers were not troubled.

Endangered Species (Graham Wolfe, Ken Lampard, Butch Walker and Jen Neaves) were a class above Sierra Park B (Posie Mann, Kelly Nielson, Tim Wilken and Claire McKenry) 6 sets to 0 (36-2). Thanks to Claire for filling in to enable this match to proceed.

ARK (Sally, Will and Tony Allen and Sarah Middleton) got back on track against Webb & Friends (Lachie and Riley Fitzgerald, Brooke Kelly and Jayden Duncan) 5 sets to 1 (33-11). Lyndell Robinson and Wally Koch should be back for ARK next week to settle their line-up.

The last match was a forfeit as Footballers are no longer in the building (having vacated the Monivae Boarding House) and it was a walk over to their young opponents Double Trouble.

Next Wednesday is the last night of competition before the Christmas Break, and all players are encouraged to stay behind for some fellowship and pizza after tennis.
