A blustery wind and, for those playing on the grass courts, the deadening effect of recent rain, made for difficult conditions for tennis on Wednesday night. However, as the night progressed the wind dropped and the players adjusted to the conditions, an excellent standard of tennis was displayed.
In A Grade Unreliables (Justin Ryan, Dave Wear, Ben Carroll and Aleesha Phillips) showed Woolly Wonders (Peter Fry, Rob Stewart, Bill Bailey and Sally Warnock) no mercy winning 6 sets to 0 (36-10).
CG Racquets and Jeals fought out the match of the night, with Jeals (Daryn & Chelsea Jeal, Steve Coleman and Laura Herben) prevailing over CG Racquets (Zeb Lewis, Hamish McDonald, Tracey Deary and Vicki Kearney) 4 sets to 2 (32-27). Other matches had long finished when Jeals won the last set 7-5 to seal the victory.
Baimbridge (Doug Ward, David Bain, Tryleen Phillips and Pam Lehmann) showed their depth of talent over a highly competitive Goodies (Tim Mason, Peter Osmond, Joanna Cochran and Sarah Middleton) prevailing 4 sets to 2 (34-30). It was good to see Pam Lehmann back on the court for Baimbridge and Peter Osmond was in sparkling form for Goodies.
The last A Grade match was between a strong Pierce Toff line-up (Justin Slade, Willow Sainsbury, Arthur Perry and John Pierce) who were too accomplished for the newly promoted Endangered Species (Graham Wolfe, Ken Lampard, Butch Walker and Jen Neaves) winning 6 sets to 0 (37-16). Butch Walker and Jen Neaves came very close to taking a set from Arthur Perry and John Pierce (losing 6-7) but otherwise, with Justin Slade in control, Pierce Toff were too strong.
In B Grade, Sierra Park A (Louise Patterson, Guy Robertson, Wal Dyer and Sam Clarke) broke through for their first win in spectacular fashion beating Webb & Friends (Bailey & Cameron Webb, Eve Bastock and Brooke Kelly) 6 sets to 0 (36-8). In fairness to the young players from Webb & Friends, Guy Robertson was a handy fill-in for their opponents.
Youth prevailed over experience in the battle between Footballers (Lachie Middleton, Charlie Bennett, Lleyton Robertson and Baden Penrose) and Musketeers (Michael Kelso, Rob Evans, Marcus Winter-Cooke and Amanda Gubbins) with Footballers winning 4 sets to 2 (27-18). Musketeers took their loss stoically and seemed to recover their good humour fairly quickly after the match.
There was a fascinating contest, again mainly between youth and experience, between Double Trouble (Ken & Connor Burns, Indi Ryan and Kobi Walter) and ARK (Tony & Sally Allen, Lyndel Robinson and Wally Koch). Fortunes fluctuated in this battle with ARK just prevailing 3 sets all (24-20). The skill of Ken Burns helped his youthful team mates but the steadiness of ARK prevailed on the night.
In the last B Grade contest, Sierra Park B (Danny Franc, Aiden Pierce, Will Crawford and Tim Wilken) recorded a solid win over Easy Hit (Darian Schultz, Steve Criddle, John Sarena and Sue Creedy) 6 sets to 0 (37-16).
Baimbridge, Pierce Toff and Unreliables are the teams to watch in A Grade while ARK is the pace setter in a very even B Grade competition.
