The Grand Finals in Mixed Twilight Tennis were keenly contested on Wednesday night, in overcast conditions.
The B Grade Grand Final was between Footballers (Lachie Middleton, Charlie Bennett, Lleyton Robertson & Bayden Penrose) and ARK (Tony & Sally Allen, Lyndel Robinson and Wally Koch). Footballers have been unstoppable since Christmas and proved that form correct on Wednesday night with a convincing 4 sets to 2 (30-18) win over the never say die ARK.
Lyndel Robinson won 2 of her 3 sets for ARK and Bayden Penrose won all 3 of his sets for Footballers.
The Club was fortunate to have good participation from Juniors in this competition and it was great to see the good spirit and respect in which the match was played.
The A Grade Final was between Pierce Toff (Justin Slade, Willow Sainsbury, Arthur Perry and Danny Franc) and Baimbridge (Paul Davis, Kim Fielke, Doug Ward and Tryleen Phillips).
The first 2 sets could not have been more contrasting. Justin and Willow blasted their way to a 6-0 win while Arthur and Danny were grinding out a nail-biting tie break win 7-6 over Doug Ward and Tryleen Phillips.
Baimbridge hit back to win sets 3 and 4, and Paul Davis effort (together with Doug Ward) in climbing off the floor to topple Justin and Arthur deserves special mention.
However Pierce Toff steadied and took the last 2 sets 6-0 and 6-3 to win 4 sets to 2 (30-21). All eight players won at least 1 set for the night and Doug Ward was in excellent form after a long layoff through injury.
However the combination of power, placement and guile of Pierce Toff was irresistible on the night, as indeed it had been for most of the season.
All other teams competed on a social basis to close out the season, and those players competing on the grass courts did a great job to handle difficult conditions.
The Club now moves into Club Championship mode for the next two Wednesday nights before a break for the first term school holidays. More details about the Championships can be found on this website or email enquires to Gerard O'Keeffe.
